Over time your skin loses its full, firm, youthful
appearance due to the natural ageing process. From an
early age the amount of collagen your body produces
slows down. Collagen is the substance your body
produces to give your skin a firm and youthful
appearance. You also lose fat tissue which maintains the
fullness of your face so your face becomes thinner and
narrower, making you look older.
Sculptra™ works gradually to give a natural effect.
Usually 2-3 treatments are required and results should be
noticeable after approximately 6 weeks, however in
some patients this may take longer or require more treatments.
Clinical studies have shown that the results of Sculptra™ can last for up to 3 years, significantly longer than many
other injectable treatments.
No allergy testing is required before treatment, unlike
some other products.
The main ingredient of Sculptra™, poly-L-lactic acid, has
been used in medicine for over 30 years.
Unlike some dermal fillers which will only treat individual
lines and wrinkles, Sculptra™ actually treats most areas
of your face that may be concerning you e.g.
• Lines, wrinkles and folds
• Lines between your nose and mouth (nasolabial folds)
• Lines around the corners of your mouth
• Wrinkles in the cheeks and chin
• Sunken cheeks
• Recessed temple area
• Jowls
Because it is a collagen stimulator that reduces lines,
wrinkles and folds, Sculptra™ replaces fullness in the face
that has been lost by the ageing process. It stimulates your own facial collagen production to
replenish your skin, providing a natural looking result.
Sculptra™ gradually restores what has been lost and once
your treatment plan is complete, the results can last for
more than 3 years. As a comparison, the results of
botulinum toxins last less than 6 months, and those of
traditional fillers less than 1 year.
As with all injections you will feel some discomfort. It may
be that you feel a brief burning sensation at the injection
site. An ice pack is applied after treatment to help calm the
skin. If necessary, a local anaesthetic can be applied prior
to treatment. This can be discussed prior to treatment at your
initial consultation.
The most common side effect with the use of Sculptra™ includes bleeding, tenderness or pain, redness, bruising
or swelling at the site of injection. These side effects
generally resolve in 2 – 6 days. One possible delayed side
effect with Sculptra™ can be small bumps under the skin
in the treated area. These small bumps may not be
visible, and you may only notice them when you press on
the treated skin. Visible bumps, sometimes associated
with redness or colour change to the treated area, have
also been reported.
Side effects can be minimised by
following Aftercare instructions provided. If any side
effects occur, such as redness, swelling or small bumps
in treated area, you must report these to your Doctor
when they occur.
You will be given detailed aftercare instructions. For
optimum effects it is important to massage the treated
area twice daily for one month.
At your first treatment visit, it may appear that Sculptra™ worked immediately because of the swelling from the
injections and the water used to dilute this product. In a
few days, when the swelling goes down and the water is
absorbed by your body you may look as you did before
treatment. Sculptra™ takes time to work and results
should be noticeable after approximately 6 weeks. Your
Doctor will see you again in a few weeks to assess you.
Generally, 2 to 3 treatments may be necessary to obtain
the required results. However, in contrast to other treatments
which require refresher sessions, after the end of
your Sculptra™ programme, the results can last for more
than 3 years (dependant on age, treatment required and
type of procedure used) with no further applications required.
Consultation €50, redeemable on your first treatment.
