Gardasil works to help prevent against cervical cancer and genital warts.
Gardasil is only suitable for girls and women aged 9 to 26.
It is given before you have any contact with HPV 6,11,16,18.
Gardasil is given as 3 injections in the upper arm over 6 months. Second injection two months after first and third four months later.
If you allergic to ingredients of Gardasil or are pregnant you may not receive Gardasil.
If you have already been infected with HPV, you may still benefit from Gardasil as it is unlikely you have been
infected with all four types of the virus covered by the vaccine.
Total cost of treatment is €415 - €165 for the first injection, €125 each for second and third injections. All three must be taken to make it effective
Gardasil protects against the various strains of HPV.
HPV types 16, 18 cause 70% of cervical cancer.
HPV types 6, 11 cause 90% of genital warts.
Gardasil protects against 70% cervical cancer and 90% of genital warts. It may not fully protect everyone and does not prevent all types of cervical cancer and genital warts. Therefore you still need regular cervical smear screening.
