Patch Testing

Patch tests are used in patients with dermatitis to find out whether their skin condition may be caused or aggravated by contact with an allergen. This simple procedure can identify whether a substance that comes in contact with the skin is causing inflammation (dermatitis). Standard Tests for metals, rubber, cosmetics, preservatives.

What happens at your appointment?
The first appointment will take approximately 30 minutes. Small amounts of materials in individual square plastic or round chambers are applied to the upper back. They are kept in place with special hypoallergenic adhesive tape. The patches stay in place undisturbed for 48 hours. The back is marked with a pen or other suitable marker to identify the test sites. The first appointment must take place on Monday.

At the second appointment (on Wednesday) usually two days later, the patches will be removed. The area where the patches were are examined for any reaction . If you do have a reaction typically the skin will feel itchy or feel irritated.

On the third visit (usually on Friday) usually two days later (5 days after application) the skin is examined again. The back should be checked and if necessary re-marked on several occasions between the 2nd and 3rd appointments.
If you do have a positive test then you will be advised how to avoid contact with allergens.
A fact sheet will be given to you at the third appointment.
